ICEHOTEL

The ICEHOTEL in the village of Jukkasjärvi in Sweden is one of the coolest and strangest hotels I have ever seen. Opened in 1990, the ICEHOTEL is made almost entirely of ice and snow, including the chairs and the beds inside of it. According to Wikipedia, “even the glasses in the bar are made of ice.” Designed to hold “over 100 guests,” the hotel “features a bar, church, main hall, and reception area” in addition to rooms and suites. Guests at the ICEHOTEL can truly experience igloo living because the temperature within the hotel remains around −5 °C (23 °F).

At the mercy of the elements, the ICEHOTEL must be rebuilt every year because it exists only while the weather is cold (usually between December and April). As a result, the appearance of the hotel changes from year to year. Every year, many artists from around the world apply to help design the famous art suites of the ICEHOTEL, but only a few are selected for this unusual creative challenge.

According to the ICEHOTEL website, guests can stay in the actual ice hotel or “cold accommodation” only during the night because it serves as an “art installation for visitors” during the day. The “cold accommodation” includes some amenities to make guests more comfortable in the freezing cold. For example, the ice block beds inside the hotel include mattresses and reindeer skins, and animal skins cover some of the other ice furniture as well. Guests can bring their own sleeping bags and are advised to wear thermal underwear and other warm clothing. They can also borrow some extra clothing at no charge or buy some from the hotel shop. For those who cannot stand the “cold accommodation,” the ICEHOTEL also offers “warm accommodation” in lodgings that are more like conventional hotel rooms.

Even though the “cold accommodation” of the ICEHOTEL is temporary, the ICEHOTEL stays open throughout the year. Besides winter activities like snowmobiling and ice driving, the ICEHOTEL offers cycling tours, white water rafting tours, and other activities during the summer. The ICEHOTEL can even help people journey into outer space as one of the few Virgin Galactic Accredited Space Agents in the world.
