The Witch’s Well

Happy Halloween! I hope you enjoy this poem inspired by the work of
Edgar Allan Poe . . .

I made a wish
At the Witch’s Well
Unswayed by
Dark tales
The villagers would tell
Of well wishers
Who died
Under its spell
One wish and
One drop
Of my blood
In its black water
Were all I would need
To bring back
My beloved Evangeline.

I waited
An hour
Maybe two
Watching for her
In the distance
Owls and ravens
High above
In the broken trees
Looked out too
But sadly
Evangeline
Was not in view.

It was after midnight
When I finally left the well
I felt foolish
Waiting by its side
I regretted
I had no horse to ride
When suddenly
I saw
In the dimming moonlight
A pale fair maiden
In a long white gown
It was she–
My lost Evangeline!

She beckoned me
To follow her
Down a misty path
We walked together
Hand in hand
She was warm
Despite the October cold
Her dark hair
Scented with lilacs
As it was before
I could not believe
That she was
No more
Until suddenly
I saw
Her eyes
Afire
With a deep red glow
And from her sweet lips
Cried the voice
Of a fiend
Deep and low,
“Say good-bye
To Evangeline
And all you know
This is your end
To hell you will go!”

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. It is good to know that you understood the background story. It was a challenge to provide enough detail without slowing down the pace of the poem. This poem also has a longer length than the ones I usually write, so I appreciate your patience and the patience of other people who took the time to read it. Thanks again for dropping by to comment. I know it’s a little early, but I hope you a Happy Thanksgiving too! 🙂
